Summary: Photocopies of historical documents submitted as exhibits to the Indian Claims Commission for the case of "San Carlos Apache Tribe of Indians of Arizona and the White Mountain Apache Tribe of the Fort Apache Indian Reservation, et al. v. The United States of America", docket #22-D and 22-J. The documents reflect Apache interactions and geographical locations occupied in the New Mexico and Arizona territories, dated from 1783-1789, and 1849-1875. Included are Spanish documents related to Apache problems, dated 1783, 1784, and 1789; reports of Indian Agent Michael Steck (1852, 1855), and copies of articles in the "Daily Alta California" newspaper, 1863, 1867. Of special note is a report for Docket 22-D compiled by Alfred H. Schroeder, "A Study of Apache Indians, Part V, "Tonto" and Western Apaches, 1963."

Albert H. Schroeder was a professional archaeologist for the National Park Service for thirty years, retiring in 1976 as chief interpreter for the Southwest region. He was also active in historical and archaeological professional societies, had a responsible role in the historic preservation of cultural sites, and taught fieldwork methodology. Michael Steck, born on October 6, 1818 in Hughesville, Pennsylvania to John and Elizabeth Steck. Graduated from Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia in 1844. Appointed Superintendent of Indian Affairs for New Mexico Territory in 1863. After retiring from the Indian Service, Steck speculated on mining ventures in New Mexico with Stephen B. Elkins, who later became a U.S. Senator for West Virginia. Steck died in Winchester, Virginia, on October 6, 1880. From the description of Let...
